That Small, but Dangerous Weapon

James 3:5-105 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Psalms 141:3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

The tongue is small yet can be a dangerous weapon. The tongue is somewhat of a double-edged sword. The same tongue that is used to compliment people is also the same tongue that is used to gossip, lie, and slander. The tongue is an instrument that can do a world of good, yet can damage one’s reputation and credibility. Watching your tongue can be much harder to actually do than not. In fact, David prayed in Psalm 141 about watching our tongues. No matter what station we are in life, we all need to be careful what we say. We will have to stand before God and answer for all of our deeds, including the deeds of the tongue. Words do say a lot. Actions speak louder than words? Words are actions. Words reveal a lot about one’s character. We all need to ask ourselves what words say about us. Do they reveal an honest person, a fair person, or a selfish person? Watch out for that tongue, for the next word could spell blessing or catastrophe.
